Signposts on the Eurasian Road #2 Hans Växby

Why change?

I visited Rose and Leonard in Indianapolis, USA. They had moved and had a lot to tell about their new church. A few years ago they had decided to start a new ministry. It was called “The Well” and took place every Sunday morning in another part of the city. They leased a school, and put up special decorations every time. The hall had chairs both in rows in the traditional way and around tables. I noticed the wonderful smell of coffee and fresh made buns, when I entered. And you could stay around the table during the whole worship service, and take a second cup at anytime. The music and many other things were different from an “ordinary” worship service.

Leonard, 80+ years old shared his understanding of the unusual ministry: “Rose and I don’t like some of the modern things here, but our grand grandson loves to go here, so we pick him up every Sunday, and come here with him before we go to the other worship.”

That is what I call a Christian attitude! We don’t go to church just to have our own needs and our own taste satisfied. The worship service shall not just please those who come every Sunday. It also needs to be constructed to attract those who have not yet found a reason to come. That is why we may need to change. That may be how we move forward on our Eurasian Road towards 2015 and beyond.

“In 2015 we see UMC in Eurasia dynamically growing, recognized by the
society, helping people to become deeply committed Christians!

-Quality in ministry
-Education
-Self-sufficiency
-Mission, evangelism, growth
-Social service”
